Fundamental Skills vs Maneuvers

Initial emphasis must be on fundamental skills rather than maneuvers. Abbreviating basic practice leads to poorly executed maneuvers. Repetition of basic skills provides the foundation for success.

(Fundamental Skills)Fundamental Skills

Centered, upright torso stability.
Weight transfer via knee, foot, and hip snap.
Efficient use of the lower body and upper body for boat lean and stroke execution.
Strokes for power, turning, and bracing.
Body and craft functioning as one unit.
Stroke timing, vital in tandem craft.

(Maneuvers)Maneuvers

(Forward & Reverse Lines)Straight line paddling forward and reverse
(Eddy Turns & Peel Outs)Eddy turns and peel outs
(Forward & Back Ferries)Ferries across river currents
  • 原地旋轉 (Spins: 360 度軸心旋轉)Boat spins on central axis
(Sideslips or Shifts)Lateral sideslips and craft shifts
(River Surfing)Stationary river wave surfing
(Landing in Surf Conditions)Controlled surf landing
(90 & 180° Turns)90- and 180-degree precision turns

Hidden Costs: Time Management

Movement & Logistics

Standard syllabi usually only account for direct instructional time. Instructors must also factor in:• 學員與裝備的移動Class movement and gear hauling• 下水與上岸過程Launching and landing procedures• 必要的休息、午餐與水分補充Necessary breaks, lunch, and hydration

Pro-Tip

“The time required to guide students from one point to another often adds significantly to the course duration. Ignoring these costs can lead to delays or the skipping of critical safety segments.”

Instructor Kit

Core Gear: Boat, Spare Paddle, PFD, and Helmet
(Repair Kit)First Aid & Emergency Repair Kit

Ratios & Competent Aides

Minimum ratios are on the ACA website. Using “Competent Aides” is permitted to satisfy required ratios.

Participants with Disabilities & Competent Aides

If you have participants with disabilities, additional instructor help is recommended. More competent aides allow focused attention and faster student progress.

Obtain landowner permission; respect anglers; avoid shouting across loud rapids.

Lesson Planning & 5-Step Progression

(Lesson Planning Progression)Four Steps in Lesson Planning

Set Goals
Establish Objectives
Block-Outline
Topic Outline

(Elements of a Teaching Progression)Five Elements of Teaching Progression

Dry-land review, stretching, dry wet exits.
(Introduction of Strokes)Introduction of strokes:在受控淺岸進行轉向、傾側與支撐示範。Demonstrations at shoreline.
Execute maneuvers on calm water.
Transition to current and waves for timing.
River trip matching course level.

Teaching pacing: Provide stronger direction at the outset for prompt error correction, shifting to an informal, flexible approach later for self-directed practice.

(Orientation & Dry-Land Progression)Orientation & Dry-Land Drills

Course & Safety Briefing

Explain agenda, inherent risks, and cold water hazards. Affirm assumption of risk.

Equipment Inspection

Perform thorough equipment inspection. Emphasize shared responsibility for collective safety gear.

Dry-Land Mechanics

Draw boats in sand or sit in boats on land. Adjust arm and paddle positions.

(Wet their paddles)。 Practicing wet exits on land eases capsize anxiety. Avoid excessive dry-land lecturing to prevent boredom; move into water promptly.

(Progression & Drop-Back Principle)Progression & Drop-Back Principle

Water Depth & Stroke Sequence

Deep enough for full blade immersion and collision-free wet exits; shallow enough to stand and empty boats.

Teach turning strokes early to foster immediate success; introduce power forward strokes later.

(Drop Back a Step)Drop Back a Step Principle

If paddlers encounter difficulty during maneuvers, immediately drop back a step.

Return to an easier skill introduced earlier to review familiar moves before re-attempting.

(Developing a Critical Eye)Student Evaluation: Critical Eye

Coaching lies at the heart of an instructor: watching performance, analyzing mechanics, and communicating corrective action.

(Positive Approach)Positive Approach

No bad strokes; only efficiency. Be sensitive to individual body type, strength, and fitness.

(Gear Fit)Equipment Fit

Inefficiency often stems from improper paddle length, seat height, or cockpit outfitting fit.

(Communication)Communication

Begin with initial praise; address only one inefficiency at a time to prevent overload.

(Video)Video Analysis

Taping standard runs (straight lines, 360° spins) lets students visualize mechanics.

On-Site Teaching Techniques

Back-to-Sun

Arrange students with their backs to the sun so they can see demonstrations clearly without being blinded by glare.

Eyes & Engagement

Maintain eye contact to ensure engagement and spot fear or confusion. Avoid shouting over loud moving water.

“Instruction begins before the students arrive. Sound management is the only path to successful teaching.”
