Paddlesport Education Standards

ACA minimum educational standards, Essential Eligibility Criteria (EEC), safety regulations, transport protocols, instructor competencies, and paddlesport program development.

Paddling in canoes, kayaks, rafts, or other human-powered crafts is one of the most popular sports in the U.S., with up to 25% of adults participating annually. While statistically very safe, preventable accidents occur every year. The ACA believes the best way to improve safety is through voluntary educational programs. However, classroom minimum standards can never substitute for hands-on, on-water instruction by certified ACA instructors.

(Essential Eligibility Criteria - EEC)Essential Eligibility Criteria (EEC)

Core Principle: EECs are objective criteria established to ensure participant and instructor safety. Instructors must evaluate whether students possess physical and cognitive readiness:

Breathe-holding and keeping head above water independently or with minimal assistance.
(Wet Exit)。Independently executing a wet exit from the craft in the event of a capsize.
Following directions and communicating effectively with instructor and group.
Managing personal mobility and wearing properly fitted PFDs independently.
