1. The Nature of Learning
Learning by doing is the cornerstone of paddling instruction. The focus is how students learn. Paddling involves two core abilities:
(Motor Skills)Motor Skills
Physical actions resulting in measurable movement (e.g., stern draw turning a boat).
(Cognitive Skills)Cognitive Skills
Tactical understanding of when and why to apply techniques (e.g., timing decisions in current).
2. Perceived vs Real Risk & 20-40-60-80
(Perceived vs Real Risk)Perceived vs Real Risk
Keep real risks at a minimum while keeping perceived risks at an acceptable level to retain excitement.
Help students distinguish when to push through nervousness and when to pay attention and get off the water.
The 20-40-60-80 Rule
(Hear)Hear 20%
(Watch)Watch 40%
- 做到的 (Do)Do 60%
(Discover)Discover for ourselves 80%
3. Factors Affecting Learning
Physical Characteristics
Hamstring inflexibility impedes cockpit posture. Teach targeted stretches to enhance comfort.
動機Motivation
Motivators differ (fun, skills, or peer push). Tailor games for fun-oriented participants.
Environmental Concerns
Cold and rain drain morale. Frame weather constructively and adapt plans safely.
(Barriers to Learning)4. Barriers to Learning
(Fear)Fear
Fear triggers survival mode, blocking motor learning. Build confidence via incremental success.
(Primacy/Recency)Primacy / Recency
Students recall the beginning and end best. Utilize Whole-Part-Whole instruction.
(Negative Transfer)Negative Transfer
Old motor matrices resist change. Building new maps takes patient repetition.
(Attitudes)Attitudes & Opinions
Preconceived views cause resistance to new techniques. Address tactfully.
(Ego Defense)Ego Defense
Ego defense impedes progress. Correct individually to avoid public group embarrassment.
(Incomplete Info)Incomplete Information
Partial demonstrations force learners to fill blanks with flawed variations.
5. Four Learning Styles
(Watchers)Watchers
Need mental images of the skill. Require time to observe; demonstrations are critical.
(Feelers)Feelers
Driven by instinct and sensation. Benefit from analogies linking familiar sports to paddling.
(Thinkers)Thinkers
Seek technical details and underlying mechanics. Frequently test instructor’s depth of knowledge.
(Doers)Doers
Hand them a paddle! Lengthy lectures lose them. Learn by doing first and asking later.
(Pedagogy vs Andragogy)6. Teaching Children vs. Adults
(Needs)7. Student Expectations: Wants vs Needs
(What Students Want)What Students Want
Primary motivator; teach through fun.
Avoid unnecessary hazards and know risks.
Foster excitement without over-stimulation.
Supportive climate free of intimidation.
Success-oriented; upbeat even on failed attempts.
(What Students Need)What Students Need
Clear direction to master fundamental skills.
Cold/hungry students cannot learn. Provide water, food, shelter.
Capable teaching; instructor is not guarantor of safety.
(Instructional Methods Spectrum)8. Instructional Methods Spectrum
Command/Lecture
Teacher-centered. Efficient for facts, but minimal interaction. Minimize lecture time.
Modeling (Explicit & Quiet)
Explicit imitation plus inconspicuous modeling where students observe normal paddling.
Interactive / Reciprocal
Pairs analyze each other. Deepens learning and frees instructor for one-on-one help.
Task Teaching
Instructor models and assigns specific tasks; oversees progress individually.
Guided Discovery
Lead students via questions. Crucial rule: The instructor must not answer the question.
Problem-Solving
Student-centered. Pose hydrological challenges for learners to solve independently.
Role Playing / Scenarios
Use creative skits to animate planning, leadership, and environmental ethics.
Teaching Moment
Capitalize on unplanned events, such as an accidental capsize for rescue training.
9. Teaching Strategies & Formations
Class Control & Formations
Have materials ready; scrambling for aids sends wrong signals.
Form a semi-circle with students’ backs to the sun.
Boats aligned stern-first along shore, facing away from sun with clear classroom bounds.
(Troubleshooting)Troubleshooting: Why is this not working?
When instruction fails, step back and ask: “Why is this not working?”
Check physical stresses: Are they tired, cold, hot, hungry, or thirsty?
Check emotional states: Are they bored, distracted, or deeply anxious?
The learning progression must be based on less-skilled paddlers.
10. Teaching a Skill: M+D3 & Practice Rules
Name skill, define purpose, tell stories.
Slow motion, multiple angles, whole-part.
